Jeff Koons launches a new line of handbags with Louis Vuitton

In what is probably the least-surprising collaboration ever, Jeff Koons just announced that he will be releasing a line of handbags with none-other than Louis Vuitton.

This is not Louis Vuitton’s first collaboration with an artist; Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince and Stephen Sprouse have all worked with the brand before as well.

All of those artists, however, actually made something new. But Koons, as is his way, did not design his own line of balloon animal bags. Instead, the 51-piece collection — called “Masters” — consists of masterpieces from actual artists printed on the bags (Titian, Van Gogh, Fragonard, Rubens and Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”). They were inspired by Koons’ “Gazing Ball” series, in which he reproduced famous paintings with a blue orb in front of them.

“I hope people understand my ideas,” Koons told the Times. “I hope they embrace them as a continuation of my effort to erase the hierarchy attached to fine art and old masters.”

We’re not sure how designing a line of bags that range from $1,000 to $3,000 accomplishes that, but as the Times points out, the bags are cheaper than the real thing. And Koons helpfully notes that anyone who can’t afford a bag can “walk by the windows of Louis Vuitton and enjoy them.”

If you are interested in buying the bags, they are only going to be available at a special pop-up in New York, starting April 28.
