Kim Kardashian is studying to become a lawyer, and People Are Obsessed. In news I didn’t see coming but am absolutely living for, Kim Kardashian West is becoming a lawyer. The reality star dropped this bombshell in her new cover interview with Vogue magazine.
It turns out Kardashian West has been doing a secret apprenticeship at a San Francisco law firm for a year and has plans to take the bar exam in 2022. In the state of California, it’s actually legal to become an attorney without law school if you complete a four-year apprenticeship at a firm.
“I had to think long and hard about this,” Kardashian West said about her iconic career pivot. If you’ve been following the news, though, this development oddly makes sense. She played a heavy role in the prison release of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman who’d been incarcerated since 1996 for a nonviolent drug charge. According to Vogue,Kardashian West has been working with CNN commentator Van Jones and attorney Jessica Jackson—who together cofounded the criminal justice reform group #Cut50—for several months now, checking out prisons, reaching out to governors, and even attending White House meetings. Kardashian West made this decision after “seeing a really good result” with the Johnson case.
“The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency,” Kardashian tells the magazine, “and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like, Oh, shit. I need to know more. I would say what I had to say, about the human side and why this is so unfair. But I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case. It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”
We aren’t surprised by this move as it is common knowledge that the law profession made the Kardashians famous in the first place. Remember Robert Kardashian, who was OJ Simpson‘s lawyer and friend? Yea…that’s Kim’s dad. The apple certainly doesn’t fall far from the tree.
