Gunmen kill police, others in Abia


A police operative providing security to a Chinese and his driver was shot dead on Friday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.


An eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent under the condition of anonymity said the incident involving the death of the police and others happened on Mission Hill Road at a spot where the office of the Nigeria Correctional Service is located.

The source said the hoodlums appeared to have trailed their targets from Umuahia Cosmopolitan Area before opening fire on them at the scene of the incident.

The incident caused panic among residents of the capital city as the rumor was ripe that unknown gunmen were shooting in the city.

The source said, “The incident in Umuahia was over a white man that came out from a bank who was trailed to mission hill near prisons headquarters Umuahia.

“The whiteman was robbed of his cash, the policemen guarding him was killed and his was driver shot on the leg. The army came around to carry their corpse.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the incident.

He said the incident was an armed robbery attack, adding that the hoodlums had allegedly trailed the Chinese from a commercial Bank where he went to make a withdrawal.
