Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani said in a televised speech on Tuesday; the downing of an Ukrainian passenger plane in Tehran is an “unforgivable error”, and all those responsible for the accidental shot down will be punished.
“It was an unforgivable error … one person cannot be solely responsible for the plane crash,” the President said. the “tragic event” would be investigated thoroughly, he added.
The President pointed out that it was a good step for the Iranian Armed Forces admitting to their mistake, he stated that his government was “accountable to Iranians and other nations who lost lives in the plane crash”.
The military said the passenger plane made a turn towards a sensitive site belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and was then mistaken for a cruise missile, hence the shut down.
This incident came just hours after Iran sent out missile strikes on two US forces airbases in Iraq, which was response to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, Iranian commander in a US airstrike in Baghdad.
However, Iran’s president has called for a court to be set up for adequate investigations. “This is not an ordinary case” – he said. “The entire the world will be watching this court”.
