Super Eagles of Nigeria and Arsenal midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has reflected the excitement and enthusiasm at the London club following the contract extension of manager Arsene Wenger whom he aptly describes as ‘Mr. Arsenal’.
Iwobi was on international duty for Nigeria on Thursday in the Super Eagles’ 3-1 win over Togo in an international friendly in Paris. The Sun on Sunday quotes the Nigerian who has never hidden his support for the Frenchman who has been widely criticised for the lack of Premier League title wins since 2004 albeit he has overseen seven FA Cup triumphs out of the 13 the club has won overall.
Wenger recently put pen to paper on a new two-year contract meaning the manager will be in charge of the Gunners until the summer of 2019. “I’m backing Arsene Wenger to win the league title at Arsenal again,” Iwobi tells The Sun. “There won’t be a single player in our dressing room next season who will not fight for him. “We’d run through brick walls for the boss. I’m pleased because he really is Mr Arsenal, isn’t he? He has made it the great institution it is today. “Unfortunately, he has not tasted a Premier League title since 2004, but look what he has achieved in his time here.”
Iwobi points to the FA Cup triumph on May 27, in a 2-1 win over Chelsea as reason to believe in the former Monaco manager. “Even last weekend, he became the manager who has won the FA Cup seven times — more than any other. “I’m happy he’s staying — so are the rest of the lads — because it’s good for the club, good for the team,” says Iwobi who is expected to be in action dor Nigeria in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Uyo on Saturday, June 10.
