The Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF) has disclosed that it is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and other agencies to increase efforts to control Lassa fever and prevent cases of Coronavirus in the country.
The NGF Chairman, Gov Kayode Fayemi announced this after the forum’s meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night. He stated that the forum has received updates on the Lassa fever epidemic and the Coronavirus outbreak in China that has spread to other countries.
He said the implementation of the Seattle Commitment signed by the forum at a two day High Level Roundtable on Primary Health Care and Human Capital Development convened in November 2019 by Aliko Dangote and the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation is one of the top health priorities of the forum.
Recall that there were cases of Lassa fever deaths in Kano and Ondo states this week. Fayemi says he believes all the states are taking precautionary measures to address this in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He also assured that they were working hard to ensure that this does not spread any further than it already has.
He added that the forum also agreed to carry out immediate action on the implementation of the Seattle Declaration including the constitution of a multi-sectoral Primary Health Care under One Roof (PHCUOR) implementation committee. He said that governors also agreed to review the Primary HealthCare performance in State Executive Council meetings quarterly, review of States‘performance on the Abuja Commitment and organization of advocacy meetings with traditional and religious leaders.
