Gernot Rohr has explained that his Nigeria side “became nervous and started to make mistakes” in their loss to South Africa this past weekend.
The Super Eagles were beaten 2-0 in Uyo on Saturday evening in their opening Group E match in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The German coach believes that Bafana Bafana’s extra experience played a role in the game, as did his side’s inability to convert the scoring chances they created when the game was still locked at 0-0.
“We failed to convert our opportunities and when they scored, my young team became nervous and started to make mistakes,” Rohr said in his post match comments, as quoted by Allnigeriasoccer.com.
“It is a sad result, but we win together and we lose together, and when a team gets this kind of result, it looks within and rectifies whatever shortcomings in order to achieve better results subsequently. ”This can only make us stronger,” added Nigeria’s coach.
The Super Eagles will return to competitive action in August and September when they face a double header against African champions Cameroon in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
