The All Progressives Congress (APC) elders in Akwa Ibom State have written a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, refusing the listing of Senator Godswill Akpabio for ministerial appointment. The group, Ibom Integrity & Servant Leadership Culture Initiative said that such appointment is just to invite crisis to the State. They claimed that the poor representation of APC in Akwa Ibom state in the last general election was largely as a result of the destabilizing and authoritarian tendencies of Akpabio, who only believed that he has the final say in everything.
The letter titled “Ministerial Appointment”: “Why Appointing Akpabio May be Counter Productive”, was signed by the Executive Vice President of the group, Dr. Asuquo Edidem Etim. Copied to the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, the petitioners described Akpabio as a ‘destabilizing agent’.
Ini Okopido, State Chairman of the party made the appeal yesterday during a media briefing in Uyo and insisted the police and people of the state to discountenance INEC’s claims of illegal possession of the devices by its staff. He also assumed that the party was aware of pressure the PDP was putting on the police authorities to sweep further investigation of the matter under the carpet, insisting that INEC must get to the bottom of the matter. But in a swift reaction through a statement issued by INEC’s Public Affairs Officer, Don Etukudo, it accused the APC of masterminding ‘another scam’ to deceive members of the public and blackmail the commission.
