Arsenal could take advantage of a FIFA rule

Arsenal could take advantage of a FIFA rule to sign James Rodriguez from Bayern Munich for six months Arsenal have been linked with a shock move for James Rodriguez. The Colombian frontman is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Real Madrid, having joined the German side on a two-year loan deal at a cost of £11.5million. However, the 27-year-old has struggled to establish himself under new coach Niko Kovac, leading to suggestions that he could find another club in the January transfer window. Arsenal have been looking at a number of wide options, including Denis Suarez and Yannick Carrasco, but head coach Unai Emery has admitted they are only looking at loan signings this month.

A player can be registered by up to three clubs during one season, according to article 5.3 in FIFA’s Regulation on the Status and Transfer of Players, but they can only appear for two clubs in that season. It states: “Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs.

  • As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons

As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season, provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs. Equally, the provisions relating to the registration periods (article 6) as well as to the minimum length of a contract (article 18 paragraph 2) must be respected.

That would allow the Gunners to sign Rodriguez if they could reach an agreement with both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, with Bayern likely to want part of their loan fee either repaid or taken over by Arsenal, as Rodriguez has not played for Real Madrid this season. They would, however, have to pay the rest of Rodriguez’s loan fee, which is reported to stand at around £3million.Cheers Guesty! Bayern’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, would not rule out moving Rodriguez on when speaking to BILD recently. He said: “We will look at the second half of the season and we will draw the right conclusions.
